Bungie Is Making A New ‘Destiny’ Game, Possibly A ‘Competitive’ One

Reading the tea leaves of various job listings can produce somewhat nebulous results at times, but in this case, a Bungie listing for a new concept artist role (via TheGamePost) makes two things very clear:

  • This is a brand new game – “Bungie is looking for an exceptional Concept Artist who will work closely with the Art Director and Art Leads to work on an exciting new title!”
  • This is a game set in the Destiny universe – “Continually push aesthetics of the Destiny universe.”

And then there is a third, somewhat more hazy point, that this might be a competitive game. Under “nice to have skills,” it reads: “Experience with and love of competitive games.”

This joins past indications that Bungie has been working on something akin to a hero shooter, which spans a few different genres, as games like Overwatch, Valorant and Apex Legends are all technically hero shooters, albeit using those heroes across different modes.

A past job listing wanted someone with “working experience on character-focused action games,” and while we know that Bungie is working a few different projects, this new listing seems to be connecting all the dots that yes, this game may very well take place in the Destiny universe.

I said previously that Destiny is almost tailor-made to transition into a game with a hero roster. I made the above graphic when I was musing about the possibility, a possibility that now seems more likely than less.

Destiny already has the framework for so many potential heroes that I have to believe that’s what’s happening here. Destiny easily works within the “skill + ultimate” concept at baseline. It would be easy to imagine playing as Zavala with a Thundercrash ultimate and a shoulder charge “skill move” with a bonus arc grenade as he wields a Thunderlord. Or Cayde-6 returns from the dead with a golden gun super, a trip mine and Ace of Spades in his “kit.” If we are going full Overwatch, a game with gorillas and giant robots as tanks, you could see other, larger characters fitting in here like Caiatl or Savathun.

Essentially, everything seems like it’s coming together:

  • Bungie is working on a new game in the Destiny universe.
  • They are working on a new “competitive” PvP game probably based on the hero shooter model.
  • Destiny has a wide range of heroes to choose from.
  • The PvP team has been very much scaled back in Destiny itself for years now, no doubt working on these other projects.

What we don’t know is which hero shooter path this might go down. Knowing Bungie, I don’t think they’d want to do a years-late clone of anything specific, Overwatch, Valorant or Apex. I wouldn’t expect this to be a flat BR or an elim shooter. My guess is that if it is one of those, it will be heavily modified to fit Bungie’s own purposes, if not something entirely new. I mean, when everyone was first coming out with BRs left and right, Bungie was making… Gambit.

I’m excited for… whatever this turns out to be. It seems like we’re getting closer and closer to some sort of reveal, but for now, we must keep grasping at what hints emerge.
