The Pleasure of Sewing

Written by

Years ago the main reasons for sewing were ‘to save money’ and ‘the lack of variety or suitability’ of clothing in stores. Today there are
many more reasons to sew besides these two obvious ones. A large number of people sew to express their individuality. With so many fabrics and patterns available everywhere, personal  taste can easily be expressed.

As a stress reliever (much needed in today’s world) sewing offers an escape from the troubles and cares of the day. Since sewing time in-volves mental and physical activity, you are completely focused on the project at hand. The results? Stress relief plus the personal satis-faction of your own creation.

Ready-to-wear garments are available everywhere. Unfortunately many are made poorly and do not flatter the average person. Eventhose that are made with quality materials are not necessarily flat-tering to the majority of  consumers. Today’s sewers can easily turn out professional-looking garments with all the technology available
to them — helpful notions, easy techniques and not only regular sewing machines but very specialized machines for those who desire them.

If you have small children, sewing clothes for them not only saves money but gives you a great way to experiment with new techniques.
They won’t care if the garment is not perfect and the only one to really notice any imperfection will be you. Besides it is a lot of fun to create a totally unique wardrobe for that little person in your life. Remnant bins and tables in sewing stores will provide you with many economical choices for children’s clothing.

Sewing just for the fun of it is the best reason of all to sew! No longer are the patterns and instructions printed in some totally inexplicable language that only those who have literally sewn forever can understand. Patterns now focus on special groups and make the learning curve just that much easier. Beginner’s Sewing, Quick-and-Easy, Overlock and Advanced just to mention a few. Sewing patterns now also feature specialized fitting information and instructions for new techniques when needed.

And to top it all off the new computerized sewing machines are absolutely amazing when compared to what used to be available. It takes only the touch of a finger to change stitch length, stitch width or stitch type.(straight stitch, zigzag stitch, embroidery, etc) Many can be programmed for repetitive decorative stitch combinations to infinity.

Sergers (or overlock machines) stitch, trim and overcast a seam all at the same time. They are used on their own or in tandem with one’s regular sewing machine. They also do narrow rolled hems on almost anything and can clean finish the edge of a garment with a functional and decorative stitch. In today’s busy world these machines cut sewing time by at least half.

So many new notions make sewing a breeze as well. Iron-on fusible interfacings that really stay through repeated washings, basting threads and marking pens that dissolve easily with the addition of water, liquids that invisibly seal the raw edges of trims and seams and even a lightweight sheer seam binding that curls around the edge of the fabric as you apply it.

All of these, plus many more to numerous to mention (at this time) are designed to save us time in a world of seemingly less time to do what we want. They enable us to pursue our passion.
Sewing for Sewing’s Sake!
